How to Install Balances in Aluminum Windows
- 1). Inspect the window and determine if it is single or double-hung. For double-hung, both sashes move. For single hung, only the bottom sash moves.
- 2). Pull on both tabs on the bottom sash and tilt it in toward the inside of the house. Lower it all the way down to the bottom of the frame so the balance can be located. If the window does not tilt, raise it to the top to locate the bottom window balance. Pry off the balance cover with a flathead screwdriver. Find the balance on the bottom of the sash and unscrew it with a drill to remove it. Set it aside for future use.
- 3). Measure the old balance so you can obtain a new balance. Line up the new balance exactly where the old one was and screw it into place.
- 4). Cover the balance back up with the balance cover. Snap it over the top and wind the bottom of the balance with a balance tensioner. Rotate it about 10 revolutions clockwise.
- 5). Tilt the upper sash in to locate the upper balance. If the sash does not tilt in, lower the top sash so the upper balance can be located. Replace the upper balance just like the lower one was changed. Open and close the window to make sure both balances are working.
