How to Properly Wear the Kilt
- 1). Arrange the kilt so the pleats are at your back. Take the flat panel, known as an apron, in your right hand and pull across your front. Draw the leather strap attached to the apron through the hole on the left side of the kilt. There is a small buckle on the left side, too; pass the leather strap through the buckle in the same way that you buckle a belt. Now take the apron in your left hand, wrap it across your front and buckle its leather strap on your right side.
- 2). Adjust the kilt so the waistband is above your belly button. The top of the waistband should be an inch or so below your ribcage. The hem of the kilt should fall above or at the middle of your knees. Arrange the front of your kilt so it lies flat. If there is a third leather strap toward the bottom of the kilt, buckle it loosely so the front apron remains smooth. If you notice a crease in the apron, you have cinched the strap too tightly. Reach under your kilt and pull down the tails of your shirt to complete the smooth, unwrinkled appearance.
- 3). Add a belt if you like. Most kilts come with loops that were originally for the sporran, but they can also be used for a belt. Whether or not you wear a belt, thread the leather straps or chain of your sporran, the pouch made of leather or fur, through the belt loops. Position the sporran so it hangs evenly at the front of your kilt.
