How to Camp in BLM Land in Arizona
- 1). Contact the BLM Arizona State Office, or the field office in the area where you're planning to camp. The BLM State Office is located in Phoenix and can be reached by calling 602-417-9200. A representative at the State Office will give you the information you need, or put you in touch with the regional field office in the area that you'll be visiting. Information on campground locations can also be found online at http://www.blm.gov/az/st/en/prog/recreation/camping/dev_camps.html.
- 2). View information on the different BLM developed campgrounds to determine which facility best meets your needs. Check out details such as location, proximity to Arizona attractions, campground activities and cost. Campgrounds operated by BLM Arizona do not require reservations, though you can contact the regional field office in advance to reserve your spot on a first-come, first-served basis.
- 3). Consider staying at a Long Term Visitor Area (LTVA), if your stay will exceed 14 days--the maximum stay for most BLM developed campgrounds in Arizona. There are two LTVAs in Arizona--Imperial Dam LTVA, located outside of Yuma, and La Posa LTVA, located outside of Quartzsite. Visitors can stay at either of these campgrounds between April and September, though a seasonal recreational permit is required from the Bureau of Land Management.
- 4). Obtain a Dispersed Camping Location Map if you are interested in staying on BLM land in Arizona, but do not want to stay at a traditional campground. Maps can be found by contacting the Arizona BLM State Office, or by going to their website at http://www.blm.gov/pgdata/etc/medialib/blm/az/images/camping.Par.80518.File.dat/DispersedCamping.pdf. The map shows all of the BLM land in Arizona and which regional office is responsible for each location.
