How to Make Miniature Yellow & Tan Bricks for a Dollhouse
- 1). Lay a folded towel or an old blanket over your work surface to protect it.
- 2). Measure the area on the dollhouse where you need the bricks, using a ruler.
- 3). Cut the mat board to the exact measurement of the faux-bricked area with a utility knife.
- 4). Draw brick shapes onto the mat board, using a sharpened pencil and the ruler. Make horizontal lines to form the rows of bricks. Stagger the vertical lines to make the faux bricks look more realistic. For instance, begin drawing the vertical lines on the second row about a 1/4 inch farther than on the first row. Do this on alternating rows.
- 5). Paint alternating yellow bricks on the tan mat board. This creates the illusion of yellow and tan bricks. Allow the yellow bricks to dry thoroughly before continuing.
- 6). Score the areas between the bricks by tracing over them with a utility knife hold at a 45 degree angle. This creates a place for the "mortar" to fill in the gaps.
- 7). Paint the mortar color over 3 or 4 square inches of the mat board. This prevents the paint from drying before you can wipe it off. Quickly rub a damp -- not drippy -- sponge over the area. Use a light touch; you want to erase the paint covering the bricks without removing it from the gaps. Rinse your sponge if necessary, and repeat the process until you have the look you desire. Paint the remaining yellow bricks, and repeat the process with each section. Always allow the bricks to dry completely before painting on the mortar.
- 8). Paint the back of the mat board with craft glue and a foam craft brush. Press it into place on the exterior of the dollhouse, or wherever bricks are desired. Hold it in place for a couple of minutes to allow the adhesive to dry.
