Take a picture of your house and fence, load it into your computer and print off the photo several times.

Color in the fence on the photos with different colors to see what basic colors look best. Try different browns to see how a stained wood would look, along with black, white and other colors. Also try a color that is similar to your house color, but in a slightly darker or lighter shade.

Look at the pictures to narrow down your choices. When you decide on a color, go to the store and get paint samples of the color in different shades. Home improvement stores will mix samples for a small fee.

Paint the samples on the fence to see what you like best. If you go with a stain, then you will need to narrow it down to a few shades of brown. Once narrowed down, get a piece of wood of the same type as your fence. Stain the board with the samples. Stand in front of your house and hold up the sample board to see what the different shades look like. Choose one you like best.
