Flower Preparation

• Fresh-cut flowers with healthy leaves and buds are most likely to root successfully. The leaves and flower buds on the stem cause water loss, which can inhibit rooting. Strip off the leaves on the bottom half of the cutting and trim off the flower. The leaves near the top of the cutting absorb necessary sunlight when left on the stem. Cut the bottom of the stem at a 45-degree angle. The angle provides a larger surface for moisture absorption and eventual root formation.
  
  

Potting Medium

• A sterile potting mix prevents bacteria from attacking the flower stem during the rooting phase. The mix must also provide excellent drainage, as wet soil causes the stem to rot before it forms roots. Combine 1 part peat with 1 part drainage material, such as sand, perlite or vermiculite. Use a 6-inch diameter pot with at least one drainage hole on the bottom to further ensure the mixture drains well. The stem doesn't require a large pot during the rooting phase.
  
  

Rooting Method

• Flower stems root more successfully when treated with a rooting hormone. The hormone is available from florists and garden stores. Coat the cut end of the stem with the hormone, following the package application directions. Once coated, insert the bottom third of the stem into the potting mix until it stands upright on its own. The mix requires watering until it's moist but not soggy. The potting mix requires periodic water to maintain its moisture.
  
  

Plant Care

• The cutting requires constant moisture to root, otherwise it begins to dry out and die. Cover the pot with a clear plastic bag to help retain moisture around the flower stem during rooting. A skewer or chopstick inserted into the potting mix holds the bag so it doesn't touch the cutting. Keep the pot in an area exposed to bright but indirect sunlight. The length of time for rooting to occur depends on the type of flower. The stem has successfully rooted once it begins putting new growth. Checking the bottom of the stem for roots also indicates that the cutting is growing into a new plant.
