How to Build a Glass Tile Wall
- 1). Cut the tile board to fit the area where you will be building your glass tile wall. Score the fiberglass layer with a utility knife and snap the panel along the line. Cut through the fiberglass layer on the other side.
- 2). Attach the tile board to the studs with 1 1/2-inch galvanized deck screws. Leave a 1/8-inch gap between panels and a 1/4-inch gap around the perimeter.
- 3). Cover seams with fiberglass-mesh wallboard tape. Fill the gaps with thin-set mortar. Allow it to cure for two days.
- 4). Plan the spacing for your glass tile wall. Using a pencil, mark a tile sheet's dimensions on a 1- by 2-inch piece of wood. If your sheets of tiles are not square, make a separate measuring stick for horizontal and vertical placement.
- 5). Find the center point of the wall and mark it. Mark the tile placement points using the measuring stick, working out from the center. This pattern will tell you where to place each tile sheet and if you will have to cut any tiles.
- 1). Spread thin-set mortar onto a small section of the tile board using a 3/16-inch square notch trowel. Flatten the ridges and spread a thin layer of mortar onto the back of the tile sheet.
- 2). Align the sheet with the reference lines on the tile board and carefully press it into place. Seat the section by laying a 2- by 4-inch board wrapped in a towel against it and tapping it lightly with a mallet. Allow the mortar to dry for 24 hours.
- 3). Spread the grout across the surface of the tiled area using a rubber grout float. Sweep the float back and forth and use the end of the float to press the grout into the joints. Do not grout the joints along the floor or corners; these will be sealed with caulk. If you are installing translucent tiles, do not fill the gaps all the way to the top edge of the individual tiles. Light needs to reflect slightly on the inside surface of the tiles to make them sparkle.
- 4). Wait five minutes. Scrape off excess grout with the edge of the float, and then wipe a damp sponge over the tiles. Rinse the sponge in cool water frequently. Wipe each tile section only once or you risk pulling grout out of the joints.
- 5). Allow the grout to dry for 24 hours. Remove any remaining grout haze using a soft cloth and mild detergent solution.
- 6). Seal the joints along the corners and floor with silicone caulk.
- 7). Allow the grout to cure for at least seven days.
