How to Decorate a Room With Columns

    • 1). Define areas in an open-space interior with floor-to-ceiling columns. If you have a Mediterranean home with marble floors and plaster walls, arrange two or four Tuscan columns between the living area and the kitchen or the dining area and the kitchen. If you live in an Arts & Crafts home, use simple squared columns.

    • 2). Give the entrance to a formal room -- especially one with high ceilings -- added drama by putting in columns at each side of the entrance. If your home is historic, use ornate wood columns. If your home newer, use simpler composite-material columns.

    • 3). Use a stone pedestal column as the base for a small dining-room or coffee table. Top with glass so that the decorative column serves as the focal point. Pedestal bases are available in a variety of styles. Many are ornate and detailed.

    • 4). Place live plants on short pedestal columns. Ivy and ferns look especially attractive in this kind of presentation. Put the pedestal columns on each side of a doorway or window to add interest to these areas. Make sure the columns are solid stone so that they won't topple over if they're bumped.

    • 5). Display a favorite sculpture or other treasured object on a stone pedestal column. Place the column in a spot where it can be admired. This kind of presentation tends to look more stylish if you use more than one column. Try using four white pedestal columns, each displaying a separate sculpture, along a wall. If possible, flood each with light, from either above or the floor.
