SIX THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY GUITAR EQUIPMENT

For the first timer the ideal guitar to buy is a second hand acoustic guitar. The reason I say this is

• The lower cost

• You are not that concerned with the sound quality just yet

• You will be assaulting you guitar and learning through your mistakes. Best to make them on a second hand guitar.

• Sadly many people drop or procrastinate practising and eventually drop out. (Incidentally these people are a very good source of buying a barely used acoustic guitar)

You will be able to find such second hand guitars through the classified section on our website.

Some people may be feeling very confident of their abilities and dedication and want to buy the best equipment money can buy at the very start. I will not discourage you but please consult someone knowledgeable about these things before you sink your money into any guitar.
The classified section would help you locate a store near you and you can also refer to online stores.

SO WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR WHEN I BUY MY FIRST EQUIPMENT

The key things to look for in a second hand (or any other guitar) guitar:

1.Ensure there are no cracks visible on the guitar body

2.The fret board should not be bent. The way to judge this is to ensure that the distance between the fret board and the guitar strings are fairly constant.

3.The metallic frets should not be worn out. The strings would in all likelihood be in very bad shape but that is an investment you will have to make in any case.

4.Ensure that the distance between the fret board and the guitar strings are not too much. How much is too much? The thumb rule is that if you are able to comfortable hold down the string behind the fret (Remember you do not have finger strength yet!) the guitar is probably fine for you.

5.If it is possible ask for the guitar to be tuned and play it a while. Ensure that the guitar remains tuned after that brief period of play.

6.If you have done the finger exercises in the Guitar Theory and Practice section try the 3rd exercise on your guitar and ensure all the frets play out cleanly.
