How Do I Determine the Square Footage of My Countertops?
- 1). Draw a rough sketch of your countertops on the graph paper. Give yourself a bird's-eye view of what your kitchen looks like. Note on the diagram any places where you have a backsplash.
- 2). Measure the length and depth of your countertops wall to wall and note them in inches on the appropriate outlines in your diagram. Also measure the height of your backsplash and how long it runs if it is different than the length of your countertop.
- 3). Divide the completed countertop diagram into rectangles to ensure that you do not calculate twice for any piece of countertop. You can either re-measure the pieces that are shorter than the full run of countertop, or simply subtract the countertop depth from the length on any piece that overlaps.
- 4). Multiply the length and the width of each rectangle. Total the results to give yourself the number of square inches in your countertop. This number may reach into the thousands.
- 5). Divide the total square inches by 144 to calculate the number of square feet in your countertop.
- 6). Calculate the backsplash by taking the height times the length in inches, then dividing this by 144 to find the amount of backsplash your countertop needs.
