Auto Freon Installation

    • 1). Consult your auto service manual to make sure that your vehicle is newer than 1994, and does accept the R134a refrigerant.

    • 2). Locate your air conditioning system service hoses using the service manual as reference. There will be a low and high pressure fitting. Generally, the low pressure fitting is the smaller one of the two.

    • 3). Attach the freon recharging hose to the can of R134a refrigerant. Thread the hose onto the top of the can of freon to puncture the seal and make the connection.

    • 4). Purge air from the freon can by briefly opening the other end of the attached service hose. Twist the valve slowly until a tiny amount of R134a freon is released, also releasing any trapped air bubbles. Quickly close this valve back after purging.

    • 5). Connect the other end of the service hose to the low pressure fitting of your air conditioning system, which somewhat resembles a tire air valve. Unless otherwise instructed by the manufacturer, hold the can upside down to ensure a proper transfer of freon.

    • 6). Start the engine and switch on the air conditioning controls inside. Set the temperature controls to the coldest setting, and turn the vent fans on high or maximum.

    • 7). Turn the valve on the service hose to open the freon flow. Wait about 10 minutes to allow the air conditioning system to accept and absorb all of the freon in the can. The service hose will have a simple arrow gauge mounted on it. Stop pumping freon when the arrow moves into the "Fully Charged" part of the dial. Make sure you do not over or under fill. Too much or too little freon might damage the system compressor.

    • 8). Turn off the engine and close the valve on the service hose. You may then disconnect the hose from the low pressure fitting.

    • 9). Restart your automobile and ensure that your cooling system is again working properly.
