How to Install an External Hood for a Dryer Vent
- 1). Locate a point in your wall where you can take your dryer vent outside and drill a 1/4-inch reference hole in the center of where your 4-inch dryer vent will be.
- 2). Go outside and verify that the dryer vent will exit in a good location. Insert your 4 1/4-inch hole saw into your drill and tighten the bit down.
- 3). Drill a hole through the outside wall using the 1/4-inch reference hole as a center point. Go slow and let the bit do the work to make a smooth hole. Clean any dust and debris out of the hole.
- 4). Insert the dryer vent hood's pipe stub into the hole. Gently push and work the pipe stub into the hole until the dryer vent hood is flush with the outside wall.
- 5). Put a level on top of the dryer vent hood and level it by adjusting the hood until the bubble in the level is centered with the level window. Screw the dryer vent hood to the wall with exterior screws.
- 6). Load a high quality silicon caulk tube into your caulk gun. Squeeze the trigger with even pressure to lay down a smooth, even bead of caulk around the entire perimeter of the dryer vent hood. This will seal any gaps around the hood so that moisture and insects can't get in and indoor heating and air can't get out.
