How to Drive a Ground Rod
- 1). Put on a pair of gloves to protect your hands while working. Choose the location for installing the ground rod.
- 2). Dig a 6-inch deep hole in the ground with post hole diggers at the point where the ground rod will be installed.
- 3). Place a step ladder in a convenient located next to the installation point. Set up the ladder so it is stable and will provide a secure platform for driving the ground rod into the ground.
- 4). Slide the coupler and wire clamp onto the end of the ground rod opposite the pointed end. Place the coupler and clamp on the rod before driving the ground rod as it may not be possible to install them afterward due to flattening of the ground rod end.
- 5). Pick up the ground rod and 2.5 pound hammer. Climb the ladder and assume a comfortable position.
- 6). Place the pointed end of the ground rod in the center of the 6-inch deep hole. Hold the end of rod with the coupler and clamp attached. Drive the ground rod into the ground by hitting the end of the rod with the 2.5 pound hammer.
