How Can I Check the Speed of My LAN Ethernet Network?
- Find a speed test site. For this example, we will use SpeedTest.net. This site is a speed checking site that tests ping, download rate and upload rate. It automatically detects the network settings for the computer network and who the service provider is. Before the test starts, make sure that other applications hooked up to the Internet are off and that there are no downloads running in the background as they will hinder the process and make it look like the connection is slower than it is.
The way a speed test works is through a download link. The speed test will download a temporary file to the computer through a network and show on the screen what speed it has downloaded it. It will then use that same file to send back to itself and also tell what the upload speed is. The end of the test will be a report on how fast the computer is able to react, how fast the small file has been sent and how fact the computer is able to send it back.
But this site is not the only one that can be used. Contact the Internet service provider that the computers are networked through to see whether it has a preferred speed test location. Many times, Internet service providers will have one through their own website or can refer to one. All of these sites will act in the same manner and give a detailed speed test report once the process is finished.
