How to Use a Battery Tender on Your Gas Scooter
- 1). Educate yourself on how to use a battery tender and its various parts and dials. Most tenders come with instructions, and you can also find relevant information from the manufacturer's website. Since you will be using electricity, it is good to understand how each of the tender components work.
- 2). Prepare your scooter battery for charging. You don't necessarily have to remove the battery from the scooter, but it does make the job easier. Make sure the scooter is completely off and remove the wiring from the battery terminals. Disconnect the red wire first from the positive terminal and then the black wire from the negative terminal. If your battery cells look low, top them off with distilled water. The water line painted on the side of the battery will tell you the minimum and maximum levels. Never let the battery charge with little water as it will dry out and be destroyed.
- 3). Connect the battery tender terminals to your battery after securing and putting on eye protection. Connect the black wire first to the negative battery terminal. Then connect the red wire. Plug the battery tender into a power socket or cable to start the charging. Never charge and turn on the tender first then connect to the battery. This will cause sparks and could start a fire or explosion.
- 1). Allow the scooter battery to charge. A battery tender or trickle charger will take time for a low battery, perhaps as much as a half day. Check on the battery every few hours and look at the tender dial to see if the charge flow is almost none. The tender dial will tell you the charge flow, but it won't always display if the battery is actually fully charged, depending on the tender model. Turn off the tender, disconnect the battery temporarily from the tender and test it separately with a hand battery tester if you need to see the battery charging level for accuracy. If fully charged, then it's time to finish. If not fully charged, reconnect, power the tender and continue charging.
- 2). Disconnect the battery, when finished charging, by first turning off the battery tender and removing its power cord from the wall or power source. Then remove the red wire first followed by the black wire. Reconnect your scooter wiring to the battery, starting with the black wire and then the red wire. Make sure the battery is secure and clean up your area. Then you can test your scooter.
- 3). Test the battery in the scooter to make sure it's working properly. First, turn on the ignition to power the electricity but not to turn over the engine. Try your lights, horn, brake light and running light. If all work on battery power, then you can conclude the battery is working correctly. If something loses power almost as soon as you turn the key, then there is a short in the system. A burnt fuse will confirm this possibility. You will need to find the short before using the battery again, or the problem will continue.
