Ideas to Hide AC Units

    Hang Curtains

    • Curtains are one of the easiest and least expensive ways to hide your AC. First, hang sheer curtains over the window where the AC sits. These will allow you to hide your AC and still let in sun. Hang two panels of thicker curtains over the sheer curtains to disguise the AC completely, to add more style and to block out the sun when desired. You can have your AC on with the sheer curtains covering it because the air can still get through, but the AC will blow the curtains around so you may want to open them when the AC is on.

    Decorate the AC

    • Another inexpensive but somewhat time-consuming option is to cover the solid plastic sections of the AC with decorative wallpaper or scrapbook paper. Although the AC vents and controls will still be visible and the unit itself will not be hidden from view, this option allows you to embrace your AC and turn it into a work of art that complements your decor. As a bonus, you can change the look of your AC as often as you like. To make the paper stick, use spray mount or double-sided tape.

    Build Cabinetry

    • A custom cabinet built around your AC will not only disguise the unit but can also offer style and storage. Although the AC sits in a window, you don't have to cover the entire window with the cabinet,. just build it to the top of the unit. Also, build cabinet doors directly in front of the AC for when the unit is on, build shelves beneath the AC for storage and place a vase of flowers or another decorative item on the top.

    Disguise it with Art

    • There are several ways you can hide your AC with art. For example, you could build a large frame with enough space in the back for the air conditioner to fit into, then place a blown-up photo or piece of artwork in the front. You can then hang the frame whenever you want your unit disguised and take it down when you turn the unit on. Another option is to place a decorative screen with mesh-like material in front of the AC. This option doesn't have to be moved when you're using the air conditioner.
