Bear Safety Everyone Should Follow
Who's afraid of bears? In the city, not usually, although I would be afraid of a bear that's bold enough to venture into one.
Who's afraid of bears when they are camping? I would have to say, most people are fearful of them, or at least aware they are around.
I enjoy camping in the woods, as much as I can, which isn't much living a busy city life.
When I do get out there I like to go deep into bear country, for the views, not hard to find either in the Canadian Rockies.
Bear safety is always on my mind as it should be any time you visit their home.
NEVER feed bears! Don't do it, stop feeding bears, tell your friends to not feed bears! Clear enough for my first point? Hope so, because as the saying goes, a fed bear is a dead bear.
The biggest reason bears and humans have encounters is because they are, what the experts call, "food-conditioned".
It's like training a dog to lay down, he'll get a treat if he does it.
Same thing for the bear, anytime the bear sees humans he gets fed, training the bear to associate humans with food.
Now you have this bear that's lost his natural fear of humans and scavenging for food in your campsite.
How do I keep the bear out my campsite? They want food, if they can smell it, they will look for it.
Keep all food stuffs sealed in containers, and packed away in your vehicle if your car camping or hang it in a bear hang or tree, you can also keep it in a bear cache if the are available.
DO NOT keep food in your tent, why would you want to wake up to a bear eating your feet? I say food but toiletries are included, anything that may omit a smell should be sealed and kept away from your sleeping area.
Hanging food away from a bear should be away from your sleeping area and high enough so a jumping bear can't reach and far enough from the tree trunk, if it's in a tree, so a climbing bear can't reach it.
Many hike in places have poles set up in a clearing to hang packs, they will also have bear caches to lock packs away.
What I meant by a fed bear is a dead bear is that, bears that become too curious and aggressive in their search for human have to be destroyed, they can't be deterred from human food once they are trained.
Please, don't feed bears; tell your friends, these are beautiful creatures that should only be seen from a distance or on TV.
So, remember to clean up after your self, cook and store food away from your sleeping area, and enjoy the wilderness.
