How Do I Paint Birch Kitchen Cabinets?
- 1). Apply masking paper to any areas of your cabinets that you do not want to paint. Use painter's tape to mask handles, knobs and hinges.
- 2). Sand your cabinets with a fine grit sandpaper to remove the wood's imperfections. Apply long smooth strokes. On painted wood, sand thoroughly to remove the shine. This will provide a better surface for your new paint.
- 3). Wipe the cabinets with a tack cloth after sanding. This will remove the dust, which can cause the finish to appear rough and may show through your paint.
- 4). Apply thin coats of your flat paint or primer on the wood using your paintbrush. Use the same color for the flat paint and the final enamel coat to make the color even after painting. Allow your primer to dry for at least 24 hours between coats.
- 5). Sand your birch cabinet with your 00-grit sandpaper to rough up your primer coat. Sand it until it is rough enough for your final enamel coats to adhere.
- 6). Wipe your cabinets down using a tack cloth to remove the dust from sanding.
- 7). Apply the first coat of your enamel paint using a paintbrush, applying thin and even coats. Continue to apply new coats of paint, allowing a drying time of at least 24 to 48 hours between coats, until you achieve your desired color.
- 8). Remove the masking materials and allow your paint to dry for a full 48 hours before you use the cabinets.
