How to Make My Own Top-Down Bottom-Up Window Treatments
- 1). Measure your window. Take your measurements inside the window casing, as opposed to measuring the outer casing. Allow 2 inches in width and length for seaming.
- 2). Cut both your outer and lining fabric to the the desired measurements. Iron the fabric before sewing.
- 3). Lay the outer fabric and lining right sides together, so that you see the wrong side of the fabric on both sides. Sew around all four sides, sewing 1 inch from the cut edge of the fabric. Leave a 3- to 4-inch opening in one side for turning.
- 4). Stitch 1/4 inch from the edge of the fabric on each short end, creating a channel for a dowel rod within the seam allowance. Insert dowel rods into the channels and hand stitch the ends closed. Turn the top-down bottom-up Roman shade right side out and press. Hand sew the opening in the Roman blind closed with small, neat stitches.
- 5). Use a disappearing fabric marker to mark the position of drapery cord rings on the shade. Position vertical lines of rings approximately every 8 to 12 inches across the width of your shade and space the rings every 8 to 12 inches down the length of your top-down bottom-up window treatment. Place the uppermost ring marking just below the top dowel rod. Mark the position of top-down rings along the dowel rod itself. Sew drapery rings into position on the Roman shades.
- 6). Screw two sets of screw eyes into the top casing of your window, matching their positions to the markings on your shade. Thread drapery cord through the upper dowel mounted rings and through one set of eyes, pulling the cords to one side to allow the shade to lower from the top. Thread cords through the lifting rings on the remainder of the top-down bottom-up window treatment and pull these cords through the second set of screw eyes. Knot these cords at the opposite side.
