How to Control a Wisteria Vine
- 1
Prune your wisteria vine very often and always check your plant for any vines that have grown too long. It is important to control the wisteria vine by doing a significant amount of pruning during the winter months (December-February) when the plant is not growing. Do not be afraid to over do it. This plant tends to grow more as a result of regular pruning. Once you have cut back the vines enough in preparation for spring, you will only need to trim the edges to keep the wisteria from growing too long during the spring and summer months. - 2
Examine the wisteria vine and choose the right areas to cut down. You may notice that some of thickest vines need to be cut back at their base. The vines growing out of these main vines should be cut back enough to allow the right amount of flowers to bloom in the spring time. Wisteria vines vary in shapes and sizes, so you will need to examine your plant carefully to determine how much pruning is needed. - 3). Train the wisteria vine to grow on a garden structure such as an arbor or fence by pruning the vines to a certain length then wrapping the vines around the arbor. It will take a few years to get the wisteria to grow on it, but you should be successful as long as the arbor is strong enough to support the weight of the vines.
- 4). Consider digging up the plant and moving it to a different part of your garden. Wisteria vines grow very quickly and have been known to kill trees and destroy roofs if they are close enough to reach them and wrap themselves around them. If you do decide that moving the vine is necessary, you must dig up the root of this plant, choose a sunny spot in your garden for it and add fertilizer to the soil at the root. Keep in mind that the vines need to be supported by something such as a stake, pergola, arbor or fence. Don't be surprised if the wisteria vine takes several years to recover once it has been moved.
