    Removing a Flex Pipe

    • The flex pipe is installed between the engine manifold and the exhaust system. The pipe is held to each side by a flange. The flange is equipped with two bolts and a gasket. The pipe is not complicated to remove. The hardest part of removing the pipe is the location, which can be tight. You may have to work from underneath the vehicle. This, of course, will depend on the vehicle on question. Also depending on what engine you are working on, you may have to disconnect from a turbo down-pipe. Be sure to clean all flanges with a wire brush before installing the new flex pipe.

    Installing a Flex Pipe

    • Installing a flex pipe will require properly measuring the old flex pipe. Measure the flex pipe length and the diameter of the pipe opening. In most cases you can usually get away with using the old pipe as a guide for your parts store to match up. The pipe will need to be installed on the manifold first. The exhaust system is generally more flexible than the manifold. Place the pipe to the manifold and install finger tight. Be sure any gaskets are in place. Do the same to the exhaust side as well. When you hand-tighten both sides before fully tightening you will ensure that you have the correct pipe and the pipe is being installed correctly. Tighten all bolts as soon as you have verified you have a proper fit.

    Observing The New Flex Pipe

    • After the flex pipe installation you will notice a smoother-sounding motor with an increase in horsepower. Your fuel mileage will also improve. The flex pipe is now properly routing all your exhaust fumes to the catalytic converter. This is in turn making your motor more efficient.
