How to Compare Central Air Conditioning

    • 1). Choose between a split-system air conditioner and a packaged central air conditioning system. Packaged systems have the air conditioner, evaporator, condenser and compressor all in one closet. A split air conditioner has the central air conditioner located outside in a metal cabinet. Choose a split air conditioner if you do not have room for a compact unit.

    • 2). Choose a ductless air conditioning system if your home does not have existing duct work and you do not have the money to install ducts.

    • 3). Compare the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) for the air conditioning models you are considering. The higher the SEER rating, the more efficient the unit. You should choose an air conditioner that has a SEER rating of around 13.

    • 4). Compare unit sizes to find the right unit for your needs. The unit you select should be rated for the overall square footage of your home. Have a service professional come to your home and evaluate your air conditioning needs.

    • 5). Compare the noise on different units to see how much noise you can handle. Some stores will have demo units set up so you can test them out.
