5 Ways to Secure Your MacBook
- Traditional methods of securing any electronic device include keeping it locked up, out of sight or on your person at all times. When using a MacBook at school, for example, keep it securely locked in your locker when it's not in use. When you're traveling, stow it away in your vehicle's trunk where a would-be thief cannot notice it. Otherwise, keep it in a bag over your shoulder or in your backpack.
- If you use a MacBook at work or at school, you may have to occasionally leave your desk for any number of reasons. In these instances, it can be a time-consuming hassle to pack up your computer each time. Instead, invest in a locking cable that's similar to a bicycle lock. Many workstations feature places to which you can attach your locking cable, and because of its sturdy nature, it deters someone who might otherwise steal your laptop.
- There are a number of downloadable apps that give your MacBook a security system similar to those used in automobiles. Apps such as iAlertU and TheftSensor allow you to "arm" your computer just as you would do to a vehicle when leaving it in a parking lot. If someone touches your MacBook, these apps make your laptop emit an extremely aloud alarm, notifying you of the potential theft attempt.
- Some malicious individuals might not want to steal your MacBook, but they may take the opportunity to use it without your knowledge to download a virus or something inappropriate. This scenario is especially common at school, though it could also happen at work. Secure your MacBook with a password that contains upper- and lower-case letters, numbers and at least one symbol. Don't tell your password to anyone -- and don't write it down, either.
- Keeping your MacBook secure is about more than preventing it from being stolen. To keep it secure in every sense of the word, make sure you have your firewall up and an antivirus program installed. Update the antivirus program on a regular basis to protect your computer from new online threats.
