How to Decorate a High Wall
- 1). Hang two or three larger pieces to keep the space proportional instead of a handful of small artwork displays spread about on the wall. Avoid cluttering the walls just to take up space.
- 2). Paint the walls to give the space a more intimate feel. You can either paint the walls a darker shade of your favorite color and then use a shade darker than that for the ceiling, or opt to paint the walls and ceiling with the same color. Both options give the room color and help draw down the appearance of empty space with high ceilings.
- 3). Create a focal piece on high walls by grouping collections. Keep the hanging collection cohesive by using a single theme. For example, use five or six family photos in different sized frames.
- 4). Hang artwork at eye level when not placed near furniture. Keeping it at eye level will prevent someone from needing to look up toward the art, which accentuates high walls.
- 5). Add thick crown molding to high walls to add a decorative touch and bring down the expansive wall height. Add a visual interest to the lower portion of the walls by installing bead board or wainscoting and painting above it.
- 6). Install floating shelves on a tall wall spaced at approximately 1 foot going up toward the ceiling. Place tall accessories like vases, sculptures and candelabras on the shelves, which enhance the room and embrace the high wall space.
