  Daylilies are available in an almost endless combination of shapes, colors and sizes. Nurseries sell more than12,000 different daylilies of the more than 32,000 varieties registered, according to Iowa State University Extension. Their Greek scientific name, Hemerocallis, translates to "beautiful for a day," which suits them, because each flower is in bloom for one day during the daylight hours.
  
  

Pandora's Box

• Give sun-loving Pandora's Box daylily well-drained soil and watch it flourish. Dappled shade is needed in the hotter regions of U.S. Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 3 to 10. Creamy white to pale cream petals with a dark-purple to reddish-purple eye surrounds a yellow-green throat. They bloom once in mid-summer in cool regions and rebloom in warmer ones. Evergreen Pandora's Box reaches a height of 1 1/2 feet and spreads 1 to 2 feet. They tolerate a range of conditions including heat, salt spray, drought and humidity once established.
  
  

Green Flutter

• Green Flutter daylilies bloom through June and July. Despite the name, the petals are bright-yellow with ruffled edges and brown-tipped stamens extending from a green throat. Each flower measures 3 1/2 inches in diameter. The daylily reaches a height of 1 1/2 feet and width of 2 feet in hardiness zones 3 to 9. Give Green Flutter a deep, loamy, fertile, well-drained soil in full or partial shade. It's semi-evergreen in the South, where winters are warm and chances of killing frost are low. These daylilies tolerate heat and humidity.
  
  

Purple Waters

• Instead of the slender, grass-like clump of foliage at the base of Purple Water daylilies, Purple Waters foliage is erect, dark-green and about 2 1/2 feet tall and 1 to 1 1/2 feet wide. This deciduous daylily is 3 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide. They bloom repeatedly from late spring to late mid-summer in hardiness zones 2 to 9 in full sun to partial shade. Each large flower has flared, deep-purple petals arching away from the throat and smooth edges. Some petals have a lighter colored ridge running down the middle.
  
  

Chicago Apache

• Chicago Apache daylilies are late-summer bloomers with dark-red to light-red petals with slightly ruffled edges and yellow-green throats. Grow it in full sun to partial shade in hardiness zones 2 to 9. Red varieties of daylilies usually don't do well in sunlight, but Chicago Apache is the exception as its color won't fade, according to VanBloem Gardens. It reaches just over 2 feet tall with light-green, erect leaves.
