How to Burn Black Walnut Wood

    • 1). Stack pieces of softwood kindling no larger than a pencil into a small teepee in your fireplace or fire pit. Add a second layer of softwood kindling to the first, creating a teepee about as large as your hand. Softwood burns fast and hot, making it good for catching harder woods on fire.

    • 2). Place a layer of black walnut wood on top of your softwood teepee. The pieces should be no thicker than two of your fingers and only an inch or so longer than the core of your teepee.

    • 3). Stack more soft wood pieces, about a foot long and an inch or two thick, in a layer on the outside of your teepee. Make sure there is a space near the base of your teepee large enough for you to reach inside to the softwood kindling.

    • 4). Reach inside your teepee with a lighter; long-nosed taper lighters work best. Hold the lighter in place until the softwood catches flame and quickly remove your hand. The flames should burn through the kindling quickly and then lick through the second layer to the soft wood on the third layer. This creates a long-lasting fire.
