    • 1). Choose a spot in your garden to grow your garlic. Pick a sunny spot that is shielded from wind. Garlic grows best in soil that drains well.

    • 2). Prepare the soil for your garlic. Garlic is best suited to sandy, loamy soil that is rich with organic matter. Before you plant your garlic, add a thick layer of compost to your soil to make the soil friable. You should be able to pick up clumps of your soil and crumble it between your fingers.

    • 3). Prepare your garlic for planting. Pull a single clove from a bulb of garlic for each garlic plant that you want to grow. Do not remove the skin from the clove. The bigger your clove is, the bigger your new bulb will be.

    • 4). Dig a 2-inch deep hole for each garlic clove that you want to plant. These holes must be at least 6 inches apart.

    • 5). Place a clove of garlic in each hole. The pointy sides should be facing up. Cover the garlic with soil and compost and pat the earth down on top of each clove. Apply a 10-10-10 fertilizer to the soil and water thoroughly.

    • 6). Cover the garlic with a layer of mulch.

    • 7). Expect to see your garlic emerge in the early spring. Keep the soil moist during the growing season but do not allow the garlic to sit in standing water.

    • 8). Harvest your garlic when the tips of your plant begin to dry in the late summer. Dig your garlic bulbs up and allow the tops to dry completely before you remove them.

    • 9). Store your garlic below 40 degrees Fahrenheit until you are ready to eat it. The garlic should keep for six to seven months.
