The Difference Between a Modern Shag & 80s Rocker Girl Hair

The shag hairstyle is very rock'n roll -- casual, mussy and visually effortless. Think "bedhead." The typical features that make up a shag hairstyle include choppy ends, loads of layers around the crown and lots of texture.

The shag works on almost every hair texture and in every hair length. One has to be careful with the shag because a hairstyle with too many layers can appear dated. Search online for shag hairstyles (or on Pinterest) and the images that appear show women with hairstyles that seems straight out of 1999.

Think Jennifer Aniston on the early "Friends" episodes or guys with mullet hairstyles.

The modern shag is choppy, has lots of texture but doesn't resemble an 80s hair band. The images in this gallery show off the very best shag hairstyles today.

Lisa Rinna

The key to Lisa Rinna's sporty shag haircut is to not over-style it, according to hairstylist Kerrie Urban in Allure Magazine.

Urban says to avoid products that make your hair stiff (think gels) and instead opt for styling creams with a medium hold.

      Carine Roitfeld Shag Hairstyle

Allure Magazine asked Mark Townsend, Jennifer Lawrence's hairstylist and the man behind her shag hairstyle, for the stories behind this new cut. Here's what I learned:

On the inspiration for the cut

"It wasn't for a role...it was totally spontaneous. Her hair had quite a bit of damage from all the coloring, so I thought we'd take about four inches off, but she kept telling me to take off more and more.

I was the nervous one, because she had never said she wanted to go shorter before, but she was so excited. I ended up cutting about eight inches."

Did Lawrence bring in a picture like normal people do?

"She had a picture of Dianna Agron. It was a cut with choppy layers."

What did she think of the length?
"She loved it from the first chop. She couldn't stop running her fingers through her hair as I was cutting. When she was getting dressed, she said, "Oh my god, it feels so good, it's never been this short!"

The secret to a great shag hairstyle lies in the cut. Ask for choppy ends and layering. Your stylist may need to create layers with a razor. Don't be afraid of the razor. It helps add movement to hair and allows the stylist to remove heaviness from hair. As for bangs, they work great with the modern shag, but you can skip them. Personally I love a long side-swept bang paired with a shag hairstyle.

Product application is also important. You want to add texture to hair with a salt spray or a pomade. After you apply the product, squeeze hair to work in the product and shape with your fingers. You may want to twist large sections of hair and let them dry in place.

I can't stand it when my hair is overly done. You know what I'm talking about -- blow-dried to perfection with not a hair out of place. No matter the hair length, I prefer mussy. When my hair is short and blow-dried straight, it looks like helmet head, when my hair is long and straight, it looks staid. When I get my hair cut, the minute I walk out of the salon I want to wet it and muss it up.

Turns out I'm not alone, I recently read that the actress Kirsten Dunst insists on choppy ends because she hates her hair to look done.

And I keep reading about more and more stylists who muss up cuts for photo shoots.

To get the mussy look, follow these tips:

      1. If you have straight hair, ask for choppy ends when you get your hair cut. Then scrunch hair and let it air dry.
      2. For curly girls, ask for layers to be cut into hair so that the fullness is not on the ends. There's nothing worse on curly hair than the A-frame hair, where the ends fluff out like a fluffy skirt. Muss up curls by allowing them to airdry and twisting curls into thick ringlets as they dry.
      3. Got wavy hair? Skip the flat-iron and embrace your waves. With a great cut, you never have to flat-iron again. Hair should dry naturally into a gorgeous shape. Women pay big bucks to get hair like yours. Freshen hair with gorgeous highlights, instead. ,br> 4. Add texture with a texturizing spray. I love Shu Uemura's Liquid Fabric.
