How to Install Backer Board Over Vinyl
- 1). Measure with a tape measure the length and width of the area where the backer board will be installed. Run a tape measure across the entire area and record the measurements. Multiply the length by the width to get the total square footage.
- 2). Line up the first piece of backer board beginning in any corner of the room. Place it directly on top of the vinyl flooring and secure it in place through the vinyl and into the subflooring underneath with underlayment flooring nails.
- 3). Space the nails 8 inches apart around the entire piece of backer board and hammer them until they are flush with the surface of the backer board. Continue until the backer board has been securely fastened to the floor.
- 4). Line up the second piece of backer board with the first and leave a gap of 1/8 inch to allow for expansion. Install the second piece just as the first was installed and continue down the first row until you reach the end. Cut the last piece of the first row to size with a utility knife.
- 5). Measure and mark the piece. Line up a T-square along the mark and score it multiple times with a utility knife until it snaps into two pieces. Install it just as the previous pieces were installed. Install the second row and all of the remaining rows just as the first was installed.
