Decide the shape of your ugly doll's body and sketch it on your paper. An ugly doll doesn't have a neck so the head is part of the body. It could be a basic shape like a circle, square, long rectangle, or triangle or an object shaped like a peanut, a tooth, a piece of bread, a popsicle or anything really.

    • 2). Draw your character's face on his body. Some official Uglydolls have one eye and some have many, so it's really up to you. Use a large circle with a smaller circle in the center for the eyes. You could put hearts in the eyes if you're making a doll for your sweetheart. Draw smiley faces for her pupils if you want to make a particularly happy ugly doll.

    • 3). Sketch a mouth for your ugly doll. Draw a straight line with a couple of buck teeth, a big smile with a tongue hanging out or a zigzag line for an angry doll. Add a nose to your doll. It could be simply a dash or an oval or a shape like a little mushroom or heart. Draw in any other facial features you'd like your doll to have, like freckles or glasses.

Draw arms, legs and ears onto your doll sketch. First draw rectangles at least an inch long where you want the arms, legs and ears to be. This is for easier turning when sewing your character together. On the end of these rectangles add your foot, hand and ear shapes. Try simple shapes like ovals for feet, a three-fingered cartoon hand, and heart-shaped ears.

    • 5). Fold a piece of paper in half the long way. You are making a pattern for your ugly doll and want to make sure both halves are the same. Find the center of the ugly doll design you sketched and draw the left half onto the folded paper starting at the fold and working out to the edge. Lay one piece of felt on top of the other making sure to line up the edges.

    • 6). Position your ugly doll pattern on top of the felt and pin it down. Be sure to pin through both layers inside of the line you drew for your ugly doll's body. Cut out the body of your ugly doll following the pattern you created.

    • 7). Make paper patterns for your dolls facial features in the same way and cut them out from your scraps of felt.

    • 8). Remove the paper pattern pieces from your felt pieces. You will have two large pieces that are the front and back of your ugly doll and several small facial feature pieces.

    • 9). Lay the front piece of the felt body flat on your work surface. Position the felt facial feature pieces onto it and pin them in place. Stitch the facial features to the front body of your ugly doll.

Lay the back of the ugly doll's body flat on your work surface and position the front of the body face down on top of it. Align the edges and pin them in place. Start at the bottom of your doll and stitch around the edge, sewing the back and front together using the presser foot as a guide. Double stitch for durability. Be sure to leave an opening at the bottom to stuff your doll.

Turn your doll right-side out by inserting your hand through the opening at the bottom and pulling the fabric out through it. Use the end of your pencil to push out smaller areas.

Stuff your doll by pushing the stuffing in through the opening. Use your pencil to push the stuffing into smaller areas. Stuff your doll as hard or soft as you like.

Thread your hand needle with two strands of embroidery floss. Overlap the edges of the opening at the bottom of your doll where you stuffed him and blind stitch the opening to close it.
