How to Smoke Tail Lights on a 350Z
- 1). Open the rear hatch. You will see three round plastic covers on top of the screws behind each light. Pop these covers with a screwdriver to reveal the the bolts; remove these bolts with a 10-mm socket. At this point, each light is held in place by only two fasteners. Firmly grasp the light in the middle and pull up and out, toward the near-side rear wheel, not toward the bumper. The fasteners will pop and the light will come out. You will notice two cables connected to each light with clips. Remove the clips and separate the taillights.
- 2). Cut enough masking tape to cover the three holes on top of each light, from which you just removed the bolts. Tear off some 800-grit sandpaper and gently sand the surface of the taillight. This is to ensure that paint will adhere to the surface. Wash the light with soap and water and let it dry. You will only be able to feel the finish with your hand and get a good visual inspection after washing off the dust and letting the surface dry. Inspect the surface to ensure that all gloss has been removed and the area has an even finish. Sand, wash and dry again if necessary.
- 3). Place the lights in a clean, ventilated area without excess wind or draft. Hold a can of black spray paint for plastic upright, seven to eight inches from the lights. Spray with an even, horizontal stroke, covering the entire surface four to five times. Determine whether the lights are sufficiently dark for your taste. Continue to spray if necessary.
- 4). Let the spray paint dry in accordance with the instructions on the can. You can test the dryness by lightly touching an area that will be hidden under the bodywork when installed. Polish the surface with a dry cloth and inspect the surface again. The finish will look slightly different after the paint dries. If you desire a darker finish, apply additional layers of spray paint and let it dry.
- 5). Attach the clips connecting the cables to the taillights. Snap the lights back in place. Push them into the housing from the side and downward until they snap into place. Attach the bolts you had previously removed and place the plastic covers on top, pushing them into place firmly with your hand.
