How to Make a Valance Out of Handkerchiefs
- 1). Measure the length of your window.
- 2). Lay the handkerchiefs side by side on your work surface. The handkerchief valance should be 50 percent longer than the window when completed. Lay out enough handkerchiefs to equal a length 50 percent longer than the window.
- 3). Sew each adjoining pair of handkerchiefs together with a whipstitch to connect the entire row.
- 4). Fold the joined handkerchiefs in half lengthwise with the good sides inward and sew a running stitch down the long rough edge.
- 5). Flip the valance to put the good side outward. Measure down 1 inch from the sewn edge. Sew a running stitch along the valance. This creates a channel for the curtain rod.
