How to Do Refinishing
- 1). Sand off the old lacquer with 100-grit sandpaper. Use it folded to sand inside cracks and profiles. Attach it to a hand block to sand the lacquer off flat wood surfaces, always sanding parallel to the grain until there are no patches of lacquer anywhere on the wood.
- 2). Sand the surface of the wood smooth. If you are staining it back to the same color as it was before, you don't need to sand any deeper. If you are staining the wood lighter than it was originally, you will need to sand off all of the stain completely down to the bare wood.
- 3). Dip a sponge into stain and apply the stain to the wood. Liberally wet the wood with the stain. Wipe the stain off with a cloth. Let the stain dry for 30 minutes.
- 4). Spray the wood with a light coat of lacquer. Let the lacquer dry for 30 minutes. Sand the lacquer with 180-grit sandpaper until the wood is covered in a light-white powder. Don't wipe the powder off.
- 5). Spray another coat of lacquer on the wood. Let it dry for no less than 1 hour before handling.
