How to Make a Rain Gauge for School
- 1). Select your jar, remove the lid and ensure all contents have been removed. Peel away stickers or labels on the container. Stubborn labels may need to be soaked in water before you are able to remove them.
- 2). Place the clear plastic ruler against the side of the container. Line up the bottom of the ruler with the base of the jar and tape it securely -- a strip at the top and a strip at the bottom should suffice.
- 3). Rest the funnel on top of the jar -- narrow end inside jar -- ensuring it is large enough to cover the entire opening. Use the tape to secure the funnel in place.
- 4). Find a suitable area for your rain gauge, ensuring it is away from trees or buildings that may block rainfall.
- 5). Dig a small hole with your hands and place the base of the jar in it or place stones around the base of the jar to prevent it from being tipped over by the wind.
- 6). Leave the rain gauge outside for 24 hours to measure that day's rainfall. Alternatively, leave for a week or any desired amount of time -- be sure to check it regularly to make sure it isn't full.
