How to Remove Paint From Stock Rims

    • 1). Remove the wheels from the vehicle. Loosen the lug nuts on the wheels and raise the car with a floor jack. Lower it onto jack stands then remove the wheels.

    • 2). Remove the tires from the wheels at an automotive service center. This is not absolutely necessary, but will make the process of stripping the wheels much easier and will avoid getting paint stripper on the tires, which could potentially eat into the rubber.

    • 3). Put on a pair of rubber gloves then apply paint stripper to the wheels. If it is a spray-on type, simply apply it to any paint that you want removed. If it is the gel type, apply it with a paint brush in one direction. Paint stripper is very caustic so this should be done with the proper protection (gloves, long sleeved shirt, respirator, etc.) and in a well ventilated area.

    • 4). Wait for the paint stripper to soak into the paint for 10 to 15 minutes. You will see the paint start to bubble. Scrape the paint off with a plastic scraper. You can also use fine steel wool to scrub the paint off. In order to remove all of the paint, you may need to apply the stripper several times. Rinse the wheels thoroughly with a hose and water once all of the paint has been removed. Dry the wheels with a clean, dry towel and store them away from moisture until they are repainted.
