How to Block Macromedia Flash

    • 1). Download and install either Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome. These two Web browsers allow users to develop add-ons or extensions that alter the browser's default functionality.

    • 2). Navigate to the extension repository for the specific browser. The extensions will only work on the specific browser they were developed for, so it's important to use the Google Chrome Extension Gallery if using Chrome, or Firefox Add-ons if using Firefox. See Resources for links.

    • 3). Browse or search the gallery for "FlashBlock." FlashBlock is an extension that removes all instances of Flash on a Web page, replacing the video or advertisement with a small button. Clicking the button will load the selected Flash object, allowing you to load the Flash instances on-demand and as needed. Click "Install Now" when you've found the extension.

    • 4). Restart Firefox after installing the extension. Firefox must be reloaded before the extension is fully installed. Chrome does not require a restart. If you navigate to a Flash-heavy site, the page should load much faster with fewer distractions.
