How Do I Speed Up a Home Computer's Performance?
- 1). Run the "Disk Defragmenter" to reorganize your files so your home computer can access those files faster by finding them where the system expects to find them. Accomplish this by going to the "Tools" menu under "My Computer" and selecting the "Defragment Now" button.
- 2). Run "Disk Check" to scan your hard drive for errors and fix them. To do this in any Windows version, go to "Start," select "Run" and type in "chkdsk" without the quotes. This will check your disk for errors and fix them.
- 3). Clean up your temporary files by deleting them so they don't take up space and hinder computer performance. Go to "Start," then "Programs," "Accessories" and finally "System Tools," where you will find an option for "Disk Cleanup." Click on this option, then click on all the temporary files you don't need and select the "Delete" button.
- 4). Check and make sure you have the latest Windows updates. Do this by turning on the "Automatic Updates" option under your "Change Settings" menu in "Programs." Check the box beside "Automatic Updates," and your system will automatically download all required updates.
