    • 1). Remove the mattresses and mattress-support boards. Place the bunk bed in a well-ventilated area on a drop cloth. Clean the bed with multipurpose cleaner to remove dust, grime or body oils that may inhibit paint adhesion. Wipe the bed with a dampened rag to remove any cleaner residue.

    • 2). Stir the primer. Pour a few ounces of primer into the roller pan and also into the 2- to 3-cup container. Begin painting on any surface by first using the sash brush to cut-in the corners, edges and fine-detail areas. Before the primer has dried, use the roller to paint larger, flat surfaces in the same section. Rolling the large areas while the details areas are still wet prevents noticeable paint lines. Continue painting, one section at a time, until the entire bed is primed. Allow the primer coat to dry thoroughly, according to the manufacturer's directions.

    • 3). Stir the paint and pour a few ounces into the roller pan and also into the small container. Working in one section at a time, cut-in the corners, edges and fine-detail areas, using the sash brush. Follow by rolling on paint to cover the larger, flat surfaces in the same section. Continue painting, one section at a time, until the entire bed is painted with its first coat.

    • 4). Allow the paint to dry thoroughly, according to the manufacturer's directions. Allow extra drying time on humid days. Each coat of paint must be completely dry before applying another coat. Once the first coat of paint has dried, use fine-grit sandpaper to smooth any visible ridges or bubbles in the paint.

    • 5). Apply a second coat of paint to the bed. Allow the paint to season (harden) for 48 hours before reassembling and using the bed.
