How to Measure Bias Tape for Quilt Binding

    • 1). Lay your finished quilt on a large table or other flat work surface. Smooth out all the wrinkles and folds, leaving the outside edges straight.

    • 2). Measure all four edges separately from corner to corner, in inches. Add these four numbers together to get the total outside edge length of the quilt.

    • 3). Add the total outside edge length plus 6 inches for overlap and ease. This is the total number of inches of bias tape you need to bind your quilt.

    • 4). Divide the total number of inches you need by 36. Round up if the total is not an even number. This is the total number of yards of bias tape you need to purchase. Divide this by 3 or 4, depending on the number of yards in each package. Round up again; for example, if you calculate 8 yards, buy 3 packages of 3-yard bias tape for a total of 9 yards.
