How to Create Quilted Wall Decorations

    Make The Quilt

    • 1). Select a wall hanging pattern for the quilt top, or modify an existing, full size block or quilt pattern. Scale traditional 12-inch blocks down to half size, 6-inch blocks or any percentage desired. Reduce all pieces in the block. Execute resizing by redrawing the block to the new smaller size, tracing each different pattern piece and adding a 1/4-inch seam allowances to all sides of the new pieces.

Use an overhead projector to make applique pieces smaller, moving the projector closer to the wall to shrink the image to the desired size, and trace the resized image onto paper taped to the wall.

Piece the individual quilt blocks following the instructions included with the wall hanging or full-sized quilt or block pattern.

    • 2). Lay out the finished blocks in an attractive arrangement. Sew each horizontal row together this way: Flip the second block from the left onto the first block so right sides are facing. Sew along the right edge of the blocks with a 1/4-inch seam to join. Spread the blocks open as before. Flip the third block from the left onto the second block so right sides are facing, and sew along the right edge of the blocks with a 1/4-inch seam to join. Repeat across the row, and then move on to the next horizontal row. Continue until the blocks of each horizontal row are joined.

    • 3). Iron all seam allowances in the first horizontal row toward the left side of the quilt. Iron all seam allowances in the second horizontal row toward the right side of the quilt. Continue ironing the seam allowances in each horizontal row in alternating directions.

    • 4). Join the horizontal rows this way: Flip the second horizontal row from the top up over the first horizontal row so right sides are facing. Butt the alternating seam allowances against each other and join the rows with a 1/4-inch seam along the bottom edge. When finished, flip the second row down, then flip the third row up over the second row and join. Repeat for all rows.

    • 5). Mark quilting and pattern lines on the quilt top with a sharp pencil, taking care not to make the lines too dark.

    • 6). Cut both batting and backing fabric approximately 6 inches longer in each direction than the completed quilt top. Layer the quilt top over the batting and backing fabric. Baste all three layers in place using neutral-colored sewing thread. Quilt as desired.

    • 7). Trim the backing and batting even with the edges of the quilt top. Bind the quilt edges with bias binding. With a 1/4-inch seam and right sides together, sew the edge of the binding to all edges of the quilt top. Fold the binding over the edge of the quilt. Hand stitch the loose edge of the bias binding to the back of the quilt with a slip-stitch. Remove all basting threads.

    Hang The Quilt

    • 1). Cut a hanging sleeve of muslin fabric 5 inches wide by the finished width of the quilt. Fold the long length of the fabric, right sides together, to measure 2 1/2 inches by the finished width of the quilt. Sew a 1/4-inch seam along the open edge. Iron seam allowances open.

    • 2). Iron under 3/4 inch on one short side of the muslin sleeve to the back side of the fabric. Fold and iron under another 3/4 inch to encase raw edges and sew along the open edge of the fold to hold side hem in place. Repeat with opposite short side. The sleeve will now be 3 inches shorter than the finished width of the quilt.

    • 3). Turn sleeve right side out. Fold in half lengthwise and match this middle point to the middle point of the quilt back and pin the folded edge of the sleeve just below the bias binding of the quilt. Hand stitch muslin sleeve to quilt back with slip-stitch. Take care not to penetrate the front of the quilt. Repeat with the bottom of the muslin hanging sleeve.

    • 4). Cut lattice board 1 inch shorter than the width of the finished quilt, and lightly sand smooth. Drill a small hole sized large enough to accommodate the head of the hanging nail, 1/2-inch in from one end and centered in the board top to bottom. Repeat with opposite end of lattice board.

    • 5). Slide the prepared lattice board into the hanging sleeve. Measure and hammer two nails into the wall to correspond to the holes in the board. Slip heads of the nails through the holes in the lattice to secure quilt to wall.
