    • 1). Disconnect the battery cable from the negative terminal.

    • 2). Relieve the fuel system pressure. Use a screwdriver to depress the test port or Schrader valve near the fuel rail. It is a good idea to wear your safety goggles and, as you relieve the pressure, cover the valve with a rag to catch the fuel spray. If necessary, consult your vehicle service manual for this procedure.

    • 3). Locate the access to the fuel pump assembly. Some vehicle models provide a quick access door through the trunk. You might have to remove the carpet and panel from the floor of the trunk area to look for this door. If you find the access, unscrew the door using a Phillips screwdriver or ratchet and go to step 6.

    • 4). Raise the back of the car using a good jack and support it safely on a pair of jack stands so that you can have enough room to work underneath and lower the fuel tank.

    • 5). Get underneath the car and use a ratchet to unbolt the metal straps or flange holding the fuel tank to the car chassis. You might want to use a jack to support and lower the tank after it becomes loose. Use a pry bar to help you remove the tank from the chassis if you have never lowered the gas tank before.

    • 6). Locate the fuel pump wiring harness. It should be just above the fuel tank. Unplug the electrical connector, being careful not to damage the locking tabs or retaining clips.

    • 7). Place a pan in front of the lowered fuel tank to catch any fuel spills that might occur as you disconnect the lines.

    • 8). Put on your safety goggles and remove the hose clamps attaching the fuel lines to the pump. Have a pair of rags handy in case you need to clean any fuel off the floor and hands. Separate the fuel lines.

    • 9). Remove the nuts, screws or cam lock that holds the fuel pump/sending unit assembly to the tank. Tap at the cam lock using a screwdriver and hammer until the ring rotates free from its lock tabs.

Lift the fuel pump/sending unit assembly out of the tank.
