Time to Plant Hedges
- Since hedges run the gamut from short to 30 feet, almost any shrub or tree can serve as a hedge plant. Evergreens provide year-round protection, while deciduous plants recreate the hedge every spring. Neither appreciates planting in hot summer or icy winter.
- Deciduous shrubs and trees are dormant from the time they lose their leaves until leaf renewal in spring. Plant deciduous hedges during dormancy, ideally in the spring just before leaf break.
- For evergreen trees, select a planting time a little closer to warm weather -- early autumn or late spring. This gives the evergreen roots time to establish before facing weather extremes.
