How to Install Run Flat Tires
- 1). Take your car and your new run-flat tires to your local tire shop. You are going to need a tire mounting machine and a professional to run it in order for your tires to be mounted properly.
- 2). Have your old tires removed from your existing rims. Run-flat tires can be used on stock or aftermarket rims but should be used only on cars that have tire pressure monitoring systems. Without a tire pressure monitoring system, the tires might run flat without your knowledge and be driven on longer than they should, causing damage to your wheels.
- 3). Get a new rubber grommet. The aluminum sensors for the tire pressure monitoring system should be reinstalled on the rim using the new grommet. Reusing the grommet that was on your old tires could cause an air leak on your run-flat tires.
- 4). Have a nickel-plated valve core installed into your new tires. This is a special valve core that seals better to run-flat tires than traditional valve cores.
- 5). Use a new aluminum retaining nut on the valve core in your run-flat tires. This will also help to prevent air leaks from the new tires.
- 6). Torque all components to the appropriate level based on the individual tire and rim specifications. Over-torquing can cause breakage, and under-torquing can cause parts to loosen and come apart. Using the correct torque levels will prevent damage.
- 7). Have your run-flat tires mounted onto your rims. This process should include getting them balanced and inflated so that they can be driven on.
- 8). Put your tires back on your vehicle. Torque the lug nuts to the proper level so that your tires stay on your vehicle while you drive without damaging anything.
