What Color Trim Do You Put With Your Hardwood?

    Add Pop to the Room

    • Every hardwood floor has undertones of color. New oak has a greenish-brown hue, but older oak is a warm brown. Cherry has streaks of green and pink. Mahogany is a tone of burgundy. Select a paint chip that closely matches the floor color and use it when you pick your trim color. To add pop, select a trim color that is on the opposite side of the color wheel. For instance, if you have pine flooring that has a lot of yellow or orange in it, select a blue color to paint the trim.

    Downplay the Trim

    • Select a hue that is close to that of the floor. Using the pine floor again as an example, choose a trim color in an orange shade, yellow or beige.

    Make the Furniture the Star

    • Choose a paint color that is close to the color of the wall, only a shade or two lighter or darker. By having wall and trim from the same color palette, you allow the furniture to take center stage.

    White Is a Perpetual Favorite

    • White is always a classic look. It can be combined with any wall color for a fresh and clean look. White trim makes any wall color come to life. Since trim and crown molding are dust collectors, choose a slightly off-white shade.
