How to Make a Reverse Sweatshirt
- 1
Sweatshirts are made with both loose- or tight-fitting cuffs and bottom edge.Hemera Technologies/PhotoObjects.net/Getty Images
Turn the sweatshirt inside out and cut the neckline, cuffs and bottom band off the sweatshirt. Cut just outside the edge of the bands to keep the hems even. Remove any tags stuck in the side seam. - 2). Lay the T-shirt flat and measure up from the bottom hem twice the width you want the new bottom band to be and add 1 inch for the seam allowance. Draw a line across the width of the T-shirt at this measurement.
- 3). Measure the width of the sleeve ends for the cuff. Cut two strips of fabric that are double the sleeve minus a couple inches depending on how tight you want the cuffs to be. The new cuff can be as wide as you like. You will be folding the fabric in half, so if you want a cuff 4 inches wide you will need to cut a strip 9 inches wide. That is twice the amount plus 1 inch for the seam allowance.
- 4). Measure the neckline and create one strip the same way as the previous step. For a comfortable fit, you do not want this band to be smaller than the neck hole.
- 5). Stitch the ends of the strips together forming three loops of fabric for the cuffs and neckline. The bottom band you cut from the T-shirt was already a large loop of fabric
- 6). Lay the sweatshirt flat and position the band or T-shirt fabric below it. The band should be narrower than the width of the sweatshirt. The width of the band depends on how tight you want the bottom band of the sweatshirt to be. Stretch the sides of the band out to meet the sides of the sweatshirt to make sure you have enough stretch.
- 7). Turn the fabric bands wrong side out so the seams are showing. The sweatshirt should still be fuzzy side out.
- 8). Insert the bottom of the sweatshirt into the bottom band. Align the edges and pin in place. Do the same for the cuffs. Pin the right side of the neck band to the neckline matching seams and pin in place.
- 9). Stitch the bands to the sweatshirt on the ½-inch seam line.

Fold the bands in half to the inside, which used to be the outside, of the sweatshirt. Align the edges, pin in place and stitch down. Double stitch for durability.
