How to Create a Standby Icon
- 1). Open Paint, click "Image" and select "Attributes." Set your preferred icon size, such as 128 by 128 pixels; be sure to click the pixels button. Click the "OK" button. Pull down the "View" menu, click "Zoom" and select "Large Size." This increases your drawing room for the icon, not its actual size.
- 2). Pull down the "Image" menu again and uncheck the "Draw Opaque" item. If it is already unchecked, leave it as it is. This allows you to have a transparent background instead of the white box on the screen, but you won't see it because Paint can't render transparency on screen.
- 3). Click the "Rounded Rectangle" tool on the "Tools" palette. Position your cursor near the top left corner of the white box and drag down towards the bottom right corner, creating a rounded square button.
- 4). Select an orange color from the "Color Picker" at the bottom of the screen; if you don't like any of those colors, double-click any box and choose from the color rainbow there.
- 5). Click the "Paint Bucket" tool and click inside the square, which fills with the background color.
- 6). Click the "Paintbrush" tool, select the medium square brush head and choose white from the "Color Picker." Draw a three-quarters circle in the center of the box, similar to a smile. Draw one vertical line coming out from the middle of the circle and pointing towards the top of the box, ensuring the line doesn't touch the circle or the top of the box.
- 7). (Optional) Switch to a slash mark brush head and a darker orange color. Trace the outline of the circle line and vertical line, giving it a shadow.
- 8). Save the file by pulling down the "File" menu, clicking "Save As" and choosing a destination for it on your computer, such as your icon folder. Name the file "Standby," pull down the "Save as type" menu and select "GIF." This enables your transparent background. Click "Save."
