How to Knit a Wraparound

    • 1). Decide on a stitch pattern. Lace patterns work nicely on shawls, but require a lot of concentration to keep from making mistakes. A simple stitch pattern works as well. If you choose a simple stitch pattern, make sure to pick one that does not result in curling at the edges. All-over cables are beautiful on shawls in heavier weight yarn and will prevent curling.

    • 2). Knit a gauge swatch in your desired stitch pattern to determine the number of stitches per inch. For the swatch, cast on at least 20 stitches, depending on your stitch pattern, and work in pattern for a few inches. Lay the piece on a flat surface and measure it with a measuring tape, counting the number of stitches in one inch.

    • 3). Decide on the desired width of the wrap. A garment at least 10 inches wide works best. Multiply the desired number of inches by the number of stitches per inch to determine the amount of stitches to cast on.

    • 4). Cast on the number of stitches you determined in Step 3 and work in pattern with your knitting needles for the desired length. Make the wraparound long enough to overlap in the front comfortably without restricting arm movement. Wrap the measuring tape around your body, holding it as you would the wrap and overlapping in front to find the desired length.

    • 5). Complete the wraparound. Cast off. Use your scissors to cut the yarn several inches from the garment. Bind off all stitches using a yarn needle.
