How do I Make a Pom Pom for a Knit Hat?

    • 1). Make a cardboard template. Cut out two cardboard circles in the desired size of your pom pom. Trace a smaller circle inside and cut it out. This smaller circle should be about one-third of the larger circle's diameter (see References 1 and 2).

    • 2). Hold the two cardboard circles together. Take the yarn and begin wrapping it around the template, weaving in and out of the center circle. Aim for an even distribution of yarn, and continue until the center hole is full (see References 1 and 2).

    • 3). Slip the scissors between the two pieces of cardboard and begin cutting along the edges of the yarn. Cut along the edge of the yarn until you reach the cardboard (see Reference 2).

    • 4). Pull the two cardboard circles slightly apart. Secure the shape by wrapping a piece of yarn around the middle and tying tightly. Cut a 10-inch tail from the ball of yarn that you used to make the pom pom (see Reference 1).

    • 5). Pull both cardboard circles out and fluff up your pom pom. Trim so that all the ends are even and neat (see Reference 1).

    • 6). Attach the pom pom to your hat. Thread the tail of the pom pom through the tapestry needle. Attach by weaving the needle in and out and your of the knitted hat and secure with a knot.
