How to Replace a Coil Pack on a 2.5 Pontiac Engine
- 1). Remove the negative battery cable from the battery and lay it aside. Anytime you are working on the ignition system, you need to de-energize the system just to be on the safe side.
- 2). Locate the coil packs on the engine of your car. On the 2.5 liter engine, they are normally mounted on top of the valve cover.
- 3). Disconnect the electrical connector from the coil pack. Make sure to release the locking clip on the plug before trying to unplug it or you will damage the connector.
- 4). Disconnect the spark plug wires from the coils. Remove the four mounting bolts from the mounting bracket with a socket and lift the coil pack off the engine.
- 5). Install the new coil pack on the engine using the four mounting bolts you removed earlier. Tighten them to 40 inch-pounds with a torque wrench.
- 6). Install the spark plug wires onto the coil packs. Make sure they are seated completely on the high tension terminal of the coil pack.
- 7). Plug in the electrical connector from the engine wiring harness to the coil pack or DIS system. Be sure it locks in when you push the connector in.
- 8). Install the negative battery cable onto the battery terminal and tighten the retaining bolt with a wrench. Test run the engine to verify that the repair was successful.
