How to Know When a Watermelon Is Ripe
- 1). Examine the vine tendrils that curl around the point where the vine connects to the melon. As the melon becomes completely ripe, these tendrils will become dry and turn brown.
- 2). Notice the overall color of the watermelon fruit. Although not a foolproof indicator of ripeness, the color may turn dull from its former luster.
- 3). Push your thumbnail into the watermelon rind. If your thumbnail penetrates easily, the watermelon may not be ripe yet. You cannot puncture a ripe watermelon easily with your thumbnail.
- 4). Lift the watermelon and check the area where the watermelon rests on the soil. The spot where a ripe watermelon rests on the soil often changes from green or white to yellow.
